My project for my Art 284 class, Expanded Media 1, where I was assigned to use a vinyl cutter to create an art installation utilizing the environment around it. In Illustrator, I drew paths for the vinyl cutter to follow. Since the vinyl cutter can only cut on one colored vinyl at a time, I had to be strategic in how I would layer each color on top of each other in order to form the images. Not only that, but I also had make sure the each sheet of vinyl lined up perfectly with each other before I attached them, which is difficult due to size, the stickiness, and the flimsiness of the thinner lines.
In total, I made prints of two cats, an outline of a couch, and a yarn ball. There was this faint blue rectangle on the side of a building that I used as a base for a couch for cats to sit on. It is also near another student’s installation of a mouse sleeping in a bed…I like to think that my cats and the mouse are neighbors.
